Do you ask Why at least 5 times when setting goals?

We set goals like losing weight, running a marathon or doing an adrenaline sport. We find reasons to do them, our first whys, which can be from: for the thrill of it or to take care of my body better.

BUT then we STOP!

We never really go much further or deeper than that, so when the going gets tough we then fall off and we have to fight even harder to get back on track.

Simon Sinek is who has cultivated this phenomenon to start with why as per his book title but one of his videos then shares the power of going even deeper; watch it on YT here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF7YLGpOoz8

This really blew my mind away and so now for my goals, I’m going into at least 5 levels of why I really want this goal or the journey.

I still get knocked down, I still slip up on new habits, I still get days when I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders. On that front, nothing has changed and it won’t because you can’t control everything in life.

Even though my mind has tried to play devil’s advocate “Just give up, it’d be so much easier”; it’s never been a yes answer. I don’t always like the situation I’m in but one thing is guaranteed, if I do nothing then nothing changes. So I have to keep going; I know I’m never gonna give up, I know I can go further beyond my current limitations, I know I’m meant for something bigger.

I have too BIG of a WHY to quit, I have made myself promises that I won’t go back on and that is something I’ve had to work hard on because the easiest person you can let down is yourself. If you don’t tell anyone what you’re doing then nobody will ask you about it and hold you to account. You can make excuses way more easily to yourself and find credible evidence to back your judgement than you can try to convince another.

Whether it’s a goal you’re already making progress on or the next one you make; have a sit-down and ask yourself why each time. Get a deeper level of understanding for why you really want this but perhaps most importantly IF you really want this. If you can’t get to 5 levels, are you sure the effort to put in is worth what you’ll get out?

Do you feel the fire brewing the further down you go? Are you churning at the bits of nerves for what it will take to get there?

Do you share your goals and aspirations with others? How does sharing it make you feel? Alive, giddy with excitement, a little nervous to be saying the big goals out loud; a mix of the above?

Then take the steps to make it a habit, focus on the getting better everyday - even when you have setbacks; you’ll be surprised by how much better, stronger and more resilient you will become.

That is the life I am trying to create for myself and then inspire others around me to do as well.
